He is amazing to me. Why? Because I am his mother, of course, but much more than that. He possesses a foundation of independence.
While all his "elders" have graduated from Ivy League colleges, he has followed his own vision. His heritage is judges, lawyers, doctors, psychologists, teachers, professors, every kind of chemical, electrical, etc. engineers, eccentric scientists and chemists, writers, researchers, he explored some of these vocations, thought about journalism at NYU, and, even though he was accepted, canned it all to become a certified welder and mechanic. He rebuilt an entire engine for a 1986 Honda Prelude as his senior project to graduate from High School. Needless to say, he exceeded the expectations for graduation.
He is a thoughtful, exploring, compassionate, intuitive, young man who lives his life as an independent human being who loves to meet people, loves people, animals, and the whole exploration of life on his planet.
But be ware, just because he'd rather work with his mind and hands as a welder and mechanic, be ready for a well-thought out debate if you approach him in this manner.
He's an avid reader and writer still. He is also a musician, like his deceased grandfather who was a surgeon and jazz pianist. My son can rock a drum set on cue. Just ask him what you'd like to hear.
