The reason the government wants increased surveillance without warrants is really quite simple and if someone has mentioned this reason, I have not seen it. The reason is because they have so diminished their ability to collect real intelligence that they are trying anything to buck up their so-called intelligence.. Thus, they feel the need to check 'everything' that comes across the wire, whether it is on the phone or the internet.
What scanning every email or every phone call amounts to, is trying to find a needle in a haystack. Apparently this is how bad the so-called intelligence in the US has degenerated.
In the past, this sort of spying on the american public would have been not only unacceptable, but completely unneeded because we used to have good intelligence which acted as a filter on which communications needed to be monitored. It is incompetence that has put us in the situation we are in now, and every US citizen should check on the records of their congressmen to see how they have voted and how they have supported the current administration in it's attempts to cover it's own incompetence. These congress people need to be voted out of office.
We need a competent government to protect us. Start getting involved and start thinking about what is being said about why the government is doing what they are doing. Whatever it is that they say, don't believe it until you think about it critically. The time is now to take our country back!

Some of you may think that you will be more secure by giving the govenment Dictator powers e.g. old Russia and the old Nazi regimes. In fact, we will be less secure. Once all the particulars (terrorist or whomever) realize what is going on, they'll simply use codes that don't raise any flags and proceed with what they are doing anyway and these phone calls and emails will be ignored all the while, the intelligence agencies will be thinking they are protecting us.

Don't give up your freedoms! Never give up your constitutional rights and freedoms! If the government tells you it's necessary, get rid of the people who are part of such complete bullshti!

Chiron,
Even if this administration doesn't abuse the wiretapping power, the ways of government and power, when put totally in the hands of the government (ie no oversite e.g. due process and warrants) leads to the kinds of abuse that can lead to real problems.. Who would know? Frankly, nothing beats spot on intelligence. No new agencies had to be created, nothing had to be done in actuality (except get the existing agencies up to speed and in relevant commuincation with one another) and I believe what was done (firing many of the people who could interpret the languages for one thing) weakened us incredibly (from a covert ops point of view) and this scared the covert agencies into suggesting the only thing they thought would help them 'catch back up"! The fact that laws get passed under duress and without having been read and fully understood is simply an indication that our government is headed in a very bad direction.
Remember Al Capone in the 30's? They had every phone that they could wire-tapped and yet Capone went on murdering people (or having people murdered) left and right! It was only when they got direct intelligence (eyes on the ground) that they were able to intercept the critical information that put Capone away. A few very well-trained brave individuals could accomplish a lot more than the thousands it would take to review all the information coming in over the phones! Plus, now that everyone knows about wiretaps, they will only speak in coded words that will not raise any suspicion. So we spend a fortune for a nip now and then. Also, when you know that someone is tapping your phones, it's very easy to give them misinformation which actually makes it easier to implement your real plans (another thing Capone figured out early on).
A high price to pay for a brief moment (relatively speaking) of feeling secure. The fact is, that if you are going to depend completely on the government, you will soon be in dire straits! The citizens themselves are the best protection!
I have always appreciated your views as well. I really enjoyed lightmind in many aspects, both the political, spiritual and theoretical discussions I had with you as well as others. I believe that it has helped me grow as a person and overall has been very beneficial to me. I have even changed some of my views and had some illuminating moments because of my exchanges with everyone, both confirming my beliefs/feelings and in some cases, realizing that I was not looking at things in the appropriate way and actually changing some of the beliefs and opinions I had. So thanks for taking the time to discuss these issues with me and others as well!

Well, I don't know where you get your information, but historically speaking, wiretaps have not been very good at catching anyone and are basically an excuse for the government to spy on it's own people. I have never supported criminals, aka terrorists, whether foriegn or domestic, but I do support intelligent intelligence. Widespread wiretaps, especially warrantless widespread wiretaps are illegal and should remain so and anyone, whether they are in government positions or in private/publicly held companies should be arrested and charged with the relevant crime for implementing these unconstitutional policies. Warrantless wiretaps may make you feel safer, but in reality they don't make you safer at all.
I'm a Ben Franklin kind of guy and what Ben Franklin said about Freedom I think still applies to this very day ie:
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
